Our Curriculum: Science

Science is a compulsory subject at Nelson College from Years 9 to 11. The Year 9 and 10 courses introduce the students to the main areas of Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science and Astronomy. Students engage in a range of practical work and learn how to plan, carry out and report on scientific investigations.

Subjects offered:
Year 11-13 Biology – HOD Science, Johnnie Fraser
Year 11-13 Chemistry - HOD Chemistry, Michelle Rutter
Year 11-13 Physics - HOD Physics,
Year 9-13 Science – Head of Faculty, Dave Tinker

Year 11 students work towards NCEA Level 1 standards in Science. There are three options for Year 11 students.
General Science: This course covers all of Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Science. This is for students who have done well in Science in Year 10 and potentially may go on to do a Science in Year 12.
Science Combination: This course is for students who perhaps are considering a career in the Sciences – the course covers Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Environmental Science
Applied Science: This option is for those students experiencing difficulty in Science. Your teacher in Year 10 will give you advice about which option to take.

Year 12 and Year 13 students may opt to study any/all of Biology, Physics or Chemistry, and these three departments run successful programmes to prepare students for the NZ Scholarship qualifications.
